Our first discussion
There has been a question that has come up of late, and I was wondering what you guys would have to say about it. Most of you know that I am a science teacher, but don't let that sway your answer, because I hold the scriptures as the ultimate "trump-card" to science. The question is: "How old is the earth?" Whatever your opinion is, let's all agree to "back up" our answers with scripture, science, or logic. In other words, let us know what specifically has lead you to that conclusion. I so look forward to our discussions!!!

According to Genesis 1, the earth is at least 5-6 days older than the human race, and probably at least a little older than that. ;)
ReplyDeleteBut seriously...maybe only God knows the exact number. There are plenty of smarter and more educated men than me who could give a much better guess-timate. But then again, there are also plenty of smarter and more educated men who would try to pin down an exact number or range who really don't have a clue. :)
Ken Ham has a great ministry dedicated to biblically answering questions like this one. Interestingly enough, the specific question of the earth's age is currently addressed on the front page of his website.

There is also a museum near Cincinatti that is a product of Ken's ministry. I was just talking to a native of that area yesterday who says that the museum is world class. I'm sure it would make a very interesting visit. Let me know if you'd ever like to go there - I'm game for a road trip if you are. :)

I think one of Ken's aims is to show that science and scripture are really much more in agreement than some in the modern day would have us to believe - I think he would likely say that the two are meant to compliment one another rather than conflict, and I believe much of his teaching is dedicated to showing the truth of that.
Those are my thoughts. Will look forward to hearing more discussion. Good job with the website. - Mike L.
Mike I love what you had to say. Especially the part about nobody really knowing how old the earth is! Cool dude, thanks for your comments.

ReplyDeleteBen, great comments. I do believe as you do that the "our" in the Genesis account does refer to the Trinity. In fact, through what I have been taught and studies I have made, the word for God in Genesis 1:1 is in the plural. Now, if we compare scripture with scripture God is One, but also a Trinity. Hard to wrap your head around I know, but nontheless true.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really big on the day-age theory. It would have to mean that there was darkness for long periods of time and light for long periods of time. What would happen to the plants and animals if night lasted for a 1000 years for example, or for that matter day time?
Thanks for your comments Ben. It is exactly the type of thing I'm looking for. You are always welcome to share.
